Schools

Many school facilitators are unaware that the school hall and auditorium curtains, drapes and props are subject to annual fire safety inspections and the requirement for a "maintenance log". It is also often assumed that these items are checked during the annual inspection by the fire brigade or fire safety officer, but unfortunately these items are too often overlooked because they do not form part of the "Maintenance of Fire Protection Systems and Equipment" checklist. This checklist only covers items such as firefighting equipment, fire protection systems, structural features, and occupant safety features such as emergencies warning systems, exit lights, doors etc.

We have also become aware that some schools have had hall and stage curtain fit outs done by proactive P&C or P&F groups. Unfortunately compliance with the Australian Building & Fire Safety code has been overlooked in some instances, leaving some schools exposed to a high fire risk and litigation. Hall facilitators have a duty of care to maintain the hall/stage curtains, drapes and stage props to ensure the safest environment for all building occupants, and to reduce the risk of litigation.

The current Fire Safety Code under section C1.10 of the BCA 2009 requires that "Fire Hazard Properties" are "maintained" to conform to the AS/NZS1530.3 fire code standard(NSW AS/NZS1530.2 and AS/NZS1530.3). Water damage, stains and accumulated dust, contribute to the deterioration of the existing flame retardant in stage curtains, drapes and props, greatly reducing its ability to inhibit the spread of fire.

Fire Defender can determine the fire retardant capabilities of each item based on their exposure to these elements, and provide advice on the best way to service them. Fire Defender is offering a free no obligation onsite assessment of stage and hall curtains and stage props.
